Walking is more important for the elderly than dancing and exercising, memory is strengthened with repairing brain cells

Exercising is beneficial for people of all ages. The habit of exercising every day protects against many ailments, but for the elderly, walking is more important than exercise.

According to a new study on walking, dancing and brain health, people who walk every day have better mental health. Walking strengthens memory and repairs brain cells faster. Research has shown that the white matter that connects cells in the brains of walkers is stronger than ever.

White matter was analyzed in the research

Agnieszka Burzinska, a professor of neuroscience and human development at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and her team analyzed the white matter found in the brain. The research was published online in NeuroImage in June.

250 people were involved in the research

The study included about 250 older men and women who were not physically active, but fit. The lab tested the current aerobic fitness and cognitive skills of these volunteers. Apart from this their white matter health and function were examined through MRI scan.

Volunteers were divided into 3 groups

1 group of volunteers was given stretching and balance training 3 times a week. The second group was asked to do 40 minutes brisk walking 3 days a week. The third group was asked to dance 3 times a week. All the training lasted for 6 months. His fitness tests were then performed in the lab.

The brisk walkers performed well in the memory test

Scientists noticed changes in the bodies and minds of many of these volunteers. As expected, Walker and Dancer seemed to fit aerobically. White matter began to be renewed in most of the walking volunteers. The new scan showed a slightly larger part of his brain. Dancers volunteered better in memory tests than walkers.

What is brisk walking?

The brisk walk is a simple exercise. Anyone of any age can do it easily. The brisk walk, however, is different because it involves faster walking. Simply put, the stage between running and walking is called a brisk walk. In it a person has neither to walk slowly nor to run. Brisk walking increases blood circulation to the brain. This causes oxygen and nutrients to reach the brain cells. As a result, the brain stays healthy.

This is how brisk walking affects the brain

According to researchers, when you take a brisk walk, a hormone is released in the brain in a matter of seconds. It naturally freshens the mood.

The mental health of those who do not do aerobic exercise deteriorates

Among those who did not do aerobic exercise, white matter health deteriorated in 6 months. There was no recovery in his brain cells. It also caused a decrease in memory.
