WhatsApp chat backups against third party leaks can lead to chat leaks

WhatsApp will now launch its own encrypted chat backup feature

Even though WhatsApp's chat is end-to-end encrypted, many times you may have heard that WhatsApp chats of celebs or veteran leaders have gone viral. This is because of the third party WhatsApp backup. It is taken in the drive and is not encrypted. Now WhatsApp is going to launch a new feature than its Privacy Pro level. It will also have a backup of WhatsApp encrypted. Just 2 days ago the company launched the multi device feature.

Chat backups can now be encrypted

WhatsApp has so far not provided end-to-end encryption for third party backups i.e. cloud backups. WhatsApp's messaging service is fully end-to-end encrypted, but chat backup is not encrypted. Because, WhatsApp itself does not provide backup facility but the backup of WhatsApp chat is on Google account or Apple cloud.

WhatsApp is now working on a technology that will allow WhatsApp users to personally encrypt their chat backups, according to a tweet from WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp news. This new feature is currently on Android beta version 2.21.15.5 of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp will determine the image quality in the ‘Auto (recommended)’ option. It will compress and send the image. Videos in the best quality can be sent in HD. Low quality video can be sent in 'Data Saver'. Receiving video in the best quality will take more time than sending, although it will depend on the speed of the network.

Currently only audio, video and photo sizes up to 16MB can be sent on WhatsApp. According to WABetaInfo, this feature is currently in the testing phase on the 2.21.14.6 beta version of Android.
